The ‘mamma mia’ charity fashion show in aid White Ribbon Alliance in association with Vodacom foundation which is aimed at promoting safe motherhood together with celebrating 50 years of Tanzania independence and hundred years of international women’s day is now a reality.

Speaking at the launch, Tanzanians internationally Renowned fashion designer, Mustafa Hassanali says “ I shall launch my New afro glam collection during the ‘mamma mia’ show on 4 & 5 of March in Dar es salaam and look forward for support from People from all walks life , to my cause of promoting safe Motherhood in aid Of White Ribbon Alliance”

“Mamma Mia ” which will be held on Friday 4 of March at the Moevenpick royal Palm hotel from 8.30PM onwards and on Saturday 5 at Mnazi Mmoja ground at 3.30 pm is a perfect celebratory platform bringing people together to disseminate information on safe Motherhood.

“I am very excited to be the First to have the First Free for all Fashion Show on the 5th of March aimed not only to promote Safe Motherhood but also to make fashion more accessible to the Mass at the Mnazi Mmoja grounds” stated Hassanali

Naming the event as Mamma MIA, the name which inspired not only after the classic hit music from ABBA, but also ‘Mia’ stands for hundred in Kiswahili Celebrating Hundred years of International Women’s Day, Mustafa added, “the Entrance to the Free Show on 5th March is only One Hundred shilling as a contribution from each individual in our country who shall have indirectly contributed towards fund raising purposely for helping safe motherhood in the country.”

Adding to the point of safe motherhood, the country coordinator of white ribbon and safe motherhood in Tanzania, Ms Rose Mlay said that, since 2004, they were campaigning and asks government to increase budget on health facilities and health workers, so as to reduce the maternal death resulted from pregnancy complications.

“Up to this moment, only 51% of all women in Tanzania giving birth under a proper and desirable care from health specialists, and the only reason for that is, lack of facilities and shortage of health workers in most regions in Tanzania, this is not good, because every women has the right to safe delivery in the presence of a health professionals, that’s why we are campaigning for safe motherhood” added Ms Mlay.

Advocacy of such nature cannot be possible without partnership and support from various organizations. Mamaa Mia in Aid of White Ribbon Alliance in association with The Vodacom Foundation is also supported by Johns Hopkins Centre for Communication Programs in Tanzania,The Citizen, Uhuruone, Moevenpick Royal Palm Hotel, Ultimate Security, Novamedia, Darling Hair, and Image Masters.

Among other designers who shall participate on this campaign are, an award winning designer from Zanzibar, Farouque Abdella, and the two British celebrity designers Henrietta Ludgate and Minna Hepbum, all from London Fashion Week.

In the majestically spice island of Zanzibar, at the old stone town, an open garden space called Forodhani has for centuries been a meeting point for the locals, located on the coastline overlooking the cool blue azure Indian ocean and being overlooked by grand magnificent towering Oman sultanate palace and fort, which evoke an aura of mysticism, exotic grandness of the place.

The Swahili Fashion Week Shopping Festival will bring entrepreneurs together from different areas of Tanzania.

The festival will feature a variety of clothes, Swahili beauty, Swahili arts and crafts and Swahili furniture.

The Swahili shopping festival is presented through Swahili Fashion Week 2010’s platform. It will also be a platform where accessories designers will showcase.

The aim is to promote a “Made in Tanzania” concept.

More than 50 Entrepreneurs from various areas of Tanzania will come together to showcase and sell their products at Swahili Fashion Week Shopping Festival. The Festival will be showing alongside Swahili Fashion Week’s platform for designers from African countries especially those from Swahili Speaking Countries.

Swahili Fashion Week Shopping Festival will take place from 4th to 6th of November 2010 at Karimjee garden which will involve entrepreneurs from Zanzibar, Tanga, Kilimanjaro and Mtwara.

“This is the first time to present a shopping festival during the Swahili Fashion Week; our aim is to offer a variety of choices for different people who are coming for the fashion show as well as supporting “Made in Tanzania Products,” explained Hamis Omary, Sales and Marketing Manager.

During the Swahili Fashion Week Shopping Festival there will be different products made locally in Tanzania which will be available to buy. These will include clothes, accessories and many other exciting things. The festival will start in the morning and continues through the evening for the three days, commencing on November 4th 2010 as well as exhibiting on the 5th and 6th consecutively.

“The idea for having Swahili Fashion Week Shopping Festival came about from an audience survey completed last year. We found that, although there were a number of stalls at the event where designers exhibited their work, these were extremely limited and many attendees were unaware prior to the event that there would be items for sale”. The Swahili Fashion Week Shopping Festival is an event that will be showing alongside Swahili Fashion Week. The Shopping Festival will capture the spirit, style and essence of the Swahili coast. 60 female and 40 male models arrived at Southern Sun Hotel for the greatly anticipated model casting for Swahili Fashion Week 2010. All hopeful models were welcome to audition for the chance of being a part of the Swahili Fashion Week extravaganza.

JULIETH: To be quite honest, the contest was challenging, the other girls were very beautiful, they were well prepared too. I was however motivated to be competitive and I was always up beat most of the time. I decided to believe in myself and to work hard. It helped me to remain strong and determined throughout!

JULIETH: The contest has a pre-judgement stage whereby you are required to submit your project proposal and answer questions on it. This happened on the 21st September. Finally the contest goes to stage where we catwalk and the winner is announced. Again what matters most is being beautiful with a goal.
I must say, I had prepared myself adequately including drawing up a very convincing proposal on measures to mitigate cruelty against Albinos in the country. I also made sure I had an attractive national dress, as you can see, i had the khangas that I wrapped.

JULIETH: Beauty carried about 50% marks while the rest was based on a project proposal because they consider much beauty in terms of goals. The aim is to get a doable proposal that can be implemented by a competing girl.
Due to limited time, I didn't have a sponsor, my family took care of everything including all the expenses. I left alone carrying the national flag. The event took place in the town of Taranto in Italy between the 19-26th September, the 24th was actual final event.

JULIETH: All the contesting forms were sent via email. I agreed to contest and signed them in early September. They contacted me to let me know I had qualified to join the contest via email.

The last 8 Finalists are competing for the prestigious emerging designer title during the Swahili Fashion Week to be held in November this year.

The selection was held on 10 September 2010 at the Southern Sun Hotel where 8 emerging designers were selected by a Panelist of Four Judges. The team of Judges consisted of ,Nsao Shalua, The Director of Arts of the National Arts Council, Jamila Swai, a leading women’s fashion designer, Michelangelo Adam from Italian Embassy and Mustafa Hassanali.

The finals designers are Zarina Suleiman, Pooja Narendrakumar Jeshang, Abduel Urassa, Shaban Mfaume, Kelvin Boniface, Subira Rahma Wahure, Angelina Muna and Grace Kijo.

“In short! All 16 were good but as this is a competition we must choose the winners, the final selection has shown real creative talent in fashion designing”, explained Washington Benbella, Swahili Fashion Week Coordinator.

Benbella continued to say that “through this competition we notice that Tanzania is rich for talented fashion designers, but all who do not go on to win, I encourage them to work hard to reach their goals”.

The judges were looking at various criteria to choose the final 8 candidates based upon the designers ability to sketch, illustrate attractiveness, creativity, colour and thematic relation.

Swahili Fashion Week is a platform for designers - both fashion and accessory - from Swahili speaking countries to showcase their creativity, market their art and network with their clientele. This is all aimed at promoting fashion as an income generating, job creating industry while emphasizing a “Made in East Africa “concept.

Initiating a dynamic and promising platform for the fashion industry in the region, Swahili Fashion Week is geared towards being the most sought out after fashion platform in Eastern Africa for the international market.

The third annual Swahili Fashion Week will take place this November in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The competition, now in its third year has no age limit, and was open to anyone who believes he or she has the creative talent to be a fashion designer. “Swahili Fashion week is the perfect platform for a designer to showcases his creation, and the emerging designers competition, is a stage to jump start ones career.” Added Mustafa Hassanali Swahili Fashion Week organizer.

16 out of 31 neo talents have been selected as semi-finalist, for the Swahili Fashion Week 2010 Emerging Designer of the year Award.

The selection which was held on 29 September 2010 at the Southern Sun Hotel where 16 emerging designers were selected by a Panelist of Three Judges. The Judges were renowned designer Manju Msitta of Smart Afrika Design Label, Charles Washoma, CEO of African Life assurance and One of Dar es Salaams Fashionable man and Director of arts Nsao Shalua of Baraza la Sanaa la Taifa (National arts Council)

The selected 16 semi-finalist will once again yet undergo an Intensive Selection to select the 8 Finalist who shall compete for the prestigious title during the Swahili Fashion Week to be held in November this year.

Tanzanian model, Mario Mpingirwa will represent the country in the Mr. manhunt International 2010 scheduled to take place in Taiwan later in October.

Managing Director of Compass Communications, Maria Sarungi Tsehai said that Mpingirwa has been awarded a chance following the criteria and become the first Tanzanian to compete in the most popular male model competition.

Maria said that 23 years old Mpingirwa, has been part of the local fashion industry for almost four years now.

She said that, Mpingirwa has worked with different talented and famous designers like , Ailinda sawe, Fatma Amour and Ally Rehmtullah and recently he has worked with David Tlale of South Africa.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Jimena Navarrete, a 22-year-old model from Mexico, was named Miss Universe in Las Vegas on Monday, extending Latin America's domination of the pageant to three consecutive years.
The first runner-up was Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps, while Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell, was second runner-up. Miss Ukraine, Anna Poslavska came in fourth, ahead of Miss Philippines, Venus Raj.
Navarrete, a nature enthusiast from Guadalajara, revealed earlier in the competition that she wanted to work with women who suffer from eating disorders.
"I studied nutrition and I would like everyone to understand that it is not about your looks it is how you feel inside," the 5-foot-nine (1.75-meter) brunette said through an interpreter. "And when you feel good inside you look good."
She becomes the second Mexican to take the crown, following Lupita Jones in 1991. Venezuela claimed the title in 2008 and 2009, but in a surprise the country failed to make it past the first cut, when the 83 contestants were reduced to 15

Also eliminated at the outset was Miss USA Rima Fakih, a Muslim of Lebanese heritage who recently declared her opposition to a planned mosque near the former site of the World Trade Center.
From the start, the pageant was a close race among Mexico, Jamaica and the Philippines, whose contestants all rated strongly in the swimwear and evening wear sections. But Miss Philippines bombed during the question section, failing to detail her biggest mistake and what she did to fix it.

It’s that time of the year where new untapped creative talents in the Tanzanian Fashion industry shall have the opportunity of their dreams to become the next fashion design icon from Tanzania . An annual competition being held under the umbrella of East Africa ’s premiere fashion platform, Swahili Fashion Week.

VODACOM Tanzania, through Vodacom Foundation, will this year sponsor a charity fashion show (Fashion 4 Health black & gold gala night) by Mustafa Hassanali in aid of the Zanzibar Mental hospital in Zanzibar on July 30th.

The show is being in Zanzibar for the third year in a row and is organized by Explore Zanzibar.

“As Zanzibaris it’s our responsibility and duty to accord a decent life to those seemingly neglected by society”, said Maryam Olsen, Managing Director of Explore Zanzibar.

To support her calling, Vodacom Foundation and Mustafa Hassanali have joined forces to create a synergy that will benefit various people at the Zanzibar mental hospital.

“This year we want to renovate the male ward and build a sports’ facility. For years, patients have been staying in sub-standard wards. Patients will be able to stay and learn in a fitting environment”, stated Mustafa Hassanali, who together with Explore Zanzibar supports the work of the Mental Hospital of Zanzibar (Kidongo Chekundu).

Mustafa Hassanali, Tanzania’s most renowned fashion designer shall unveil his new creations on the 30th of July 2010 at Zanzibar Serena Inn in Stone Town, with models from Dar es Salaam.

Zanzibar’s renowned designer, Farouque Abdella shall curtain raise the event together with Mago Designs. The show shall also feature a performance by the Tanzanite Band.

Mustafa Hassanali’s “Karafuu” Collection is inspired by the Cloves of Zanzibar. The multipurpose use of this Majestical spice is embodied in the fluid silhouette embodied in this black and gold collection.

“As per my tradition, one of my dresses shall be auctioned to assist in fundraising for this hospital with which I have been involved with since 2008” noted Mustafa Hassanali.

The Mental Hospital of Zanzibar (Kidongo Chekundu), built in 1947 during the British colonial period has been in dire need of funding for a long time. The year 2009 saw 6 million TSH raised. This has been used to create a female ward and an occupational therapy room, so that the patients could be divided and allow them the respect that for so long they’ve been denied, but deserved. The money was also used to improve the gardens and improve the therapeutic environment of the hospital.

On the face of it, it looks like a simple and basic event.
However, Umodo recognizes that grassroots involvement and dedication are important for the industry to grow. There may not be true quality nor talent but supporting initiatives like these will benefit the passion for modeling in Tanzania.
It was a fun event, mingling with Journalism students, encouraging them in their studies and the arts. They had food and drinks and loads of respect for me and my team. I will continue to support these events. Perhaps an INTER-JOURNALISM TOP MODEL CONTEST eh!??
Umodo contributed Tsh 100.000 while the Showcase Tanzania Models Chairman, Amina, who is also the 2009 Royal Journalism College winner put up 100Euros!

AMSTERDAM – Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who has been avoiding international prosecutors for the past year, will be forced to appear on the witness stand in the war crimes trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor.
In a ruling published Thursday, judges of the Special Court for Sierra Leone ordered a subpoena served on Campbell and if necessary to enlist the help of law enforcement agencies wherever she is found to make sure she gets to court.
The appearance of Campbell, as well as of actress Mia Farrow and the model's former agent Carole White, who do not appear to have resisted testifying, will add a touch of glitz to a case already seen as a landmark, the first time a former African head of state has been put on trial by an international court.
Prosecutors complained to the judges that they had tried unsuccessfully to contact Campbell several times since June 2009, when they received information that Taylor had given her a rough diamond as a gift during a celebrity-packed 1997 reception in South Africa hosted by then-President Nelson Mandela.
They said Campbell's testimony would support their contention that Taylor lied when he testified that he never possessed rough diamonds.

Los Angeles — African Vibes Magazine has held its fourth anniversary celebration in Los Angeles, California. The gala event on April 24 kicked off in the early evening with the “I Wear African” fashion show, highlighting some of the newest names in African fashion. There were musical performances as well as an after party where many of the Los Angeles African community socialized into the night.
Among the designers was Korto Momolu, who has appeared as a contestant on the American television show Project Runway. Momolu is a Liberian-born fashion designer whose work has been worn by celebrities and sold in American department stores. She has quickly become one of the most well-known young African fashion designers in America.
Among her fans is Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, for whom Momolu designed a piece to wear. The garments that Momolu showed at “I Wear African” featured several solid and well-designed items accessorized with pieces from her line of handbags.
Designer Arthlene Legair is from Dominica, West Indies, and is also based in Ohio. As the founder of Legair Brand, her collection at the show included pieces that were a throw-back to classic African silhouettes and others that clearly reflected a blending of African and Caribbean influences. Legair’s daughter is also a designer and there are plans for a line she designed for younger women to be added to the Legair collection.
Chicago-based Congolese designer Kahindo Matee is the founder and head of Modahnik. Using high quality Vlisco wax material, Matee has created a line that appeals to the progressive African woman who loves the rich colors of African fabrics but requires a modern design style.
The fashion aesthetic of Cameroonian designers Maryanne Mokoko and Stephanie Mouapi is eccentric and avant-garde, two terms that have become clichés, but are nonetheless completely applicable to their designs. Mokoko and Mouapi take African fashion in a unique direction. The designers, based in the Washington, DC, area, created Cote Minou in 2006 and have been showing their designs at fashion shows all over the United States.
Ethiopian fashion designer Mekdes Tefera Taye has participated in fashion shows all over the world, and will debut her skills as a costume designer in the upcoming Ethiopian film, “The Return of Grace”. Based in Ethiopia, her designs presented at “I Wear African” reflected a variety of influences. Some of her pieces featured traditional Ethiopian cloth and most featured a flare of sexuality with exposed backs and strategically-placed straps.
Ivorian designer Christiane King was also a contestant on Project Runway and brings diverse experiences to her designs. Based in Los Angeles, King’s designs reflect the designer’s experiences in France and the United States. Her pieces at the fashion show were fun, colorful and playful.
Nigerian jewelry designer Monalisa Okojie showed pieces from her Coral Collection. Okojie is the creator of NEHITA and specializes in using various stones and gold in her jewelry collections.
The “I Wear African” event included musical performances by Dallas- and Virginia-based Cameroonian group Avenue C and Atlanta-based Liberian artist 2C.
Avenue C is an up and coming trio that blends rhythmic singing and rap lyrics. The group is relatively new and has plans to release an album soon.
Rap artist 2C is also new to the music scene. He dedicated his song “Liberian Girl” to fellow Liberian Korto Momolu. This portion of the evening was closed out by headlining act, soukous superstar Awilo Longomba. Longomba gave a brief but memorable performance, ending the show and ushering in the after party celebrations, which lasted until 2am.

I think this is my attempt to seriously detract from the World Cup in South Africa! It is a good excuse. Today I am focusing on the two powerhouse sisters Serena and Venus William. They are phenomenal tennis players, and sensational fashionistas!
Feast on the many sisterly doubles they have won on the fashion front!

I encourage women to experiment. Try out way out colors and designs. Check out the Moulin Rouge and brown body color tights that had everyone gasping! I love the Ice Cream like sneakers and sun visor caps, the girls even have necklaces and earrings on court!
